If you think a student apartment requires you to live on campus, that's not necessarily true. If you're not going to have a car while you're at college, or you don't want to deal with on-campus parking fees, you'll want to have access to public transportation. Look for student apartments that are within walking distance of public transportation, so you'll have no problem getting a ride to school each day. Many student apartments are even within walking distance of the college campus. That means you can walk to school when you want to.
